Why did I ever come forth from my mother’s womb? All I experience is trouble and grief, and I spend my days in shame.

while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrub and asked the Lord to take his life: “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”

“Man, born of woman, lives but a few days, and they are full of trouble.

“O that you would hide me in Sheol, and conceal me till your anger has passed! O that you would set me a time and then remember me!

“Why does God give light to one who is in misery, and life to those whose soul is bitter,

but people are born to trouble, as surely as the sparks fly upward.

For my days go up in smoke, and my bones are charred like a fireplace.

You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies.

From the soles of your feet to your head, there is no spot that is unharmed. There are only bruises, cuts, and open wounds. They have not been cleansed or bandaged, nor have they been treated with olive oil.

Listen to me, you who know what is right, you people who are aware of my law! Don’t be afraid of the insults of men; don’t be discouraged because of their abuse!

I said, “Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

Why must I continually suffer such painful anguish? Why must I endure the sting of their insults like an incurable wound? Will you let me down when I need you like a brook one goes to for water, but that cannot be relied on?”

Let us acknowledge our shame. Let us bear the disgrace that we deserve. For we have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our ancestors. From earliest times to this very day we have not obeyed the Lord our God.’

Then I said, “There is no cure for my grief! I am sick at heart!

Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by on the road? Look and see! Is there any pain like mine? The Lord has afflicted me, he has inflicted it on me when he burned with anger. מ (Mem)

I am the man who has experienced affliction from the rod of his wrath.

Why do you force me to witness injustice? Why do you put up with wrongdoing? Destruction and violence confront me; conflict is present and one must endure strife.

I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy.

So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day.

For you need endurance in order to do God’s will and so receive what is promised.

And others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

We must go out to him, then, outside the camp, bearing the abuse he experienced.
