Jeremiah 11:16

New English Translation

I, the Lord, once called you a thriving olive tree, one that produced beautiful fruit. But I will set you on fire, fire that will blaze with a mighty roar. Then all your branches will be good for nothing.

He is a well-watered plant in the sun, its shoots spread over its garden.

But I am like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God; I continually trust in God’s loyal love.

It is burned and cut down. They die because you are displeased with them.

May you give support to the one you have chosen, to the one whom you raised up for yourself!

For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile.

When its branches get brittle, they break; women come and use them for kindling. For these people lack understanding, therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them; the one who formed them has no mercy on them.

I planted you in the land like a special vine of the very best stock. Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?

But I will punish you as your deeds deserve,’ says the Lord. ‘I will set fire to your palace; it will burn up everything around it.’”

So,” the Lord God says, “my raging fury will be poured out on this land. It will be poured out on human beings and animals, on trees and crops. And it will burn like a fire which cannot be extinguished.”

His young shoots will grow; his splendor will be like an olive tree, his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.

Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.

You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe.

(These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.)
