Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind! Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.”

Their hearts are calloused, but I find delight in your law.

They are calloused; they speak arrogantly.

May their eyes be blinded! Make them shake violently!

But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to release them.

So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not release the Israelites from his land.

And as for me, I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will come after them, that I may be honored because of Pharaoh and his army and his chariots and his horsemen.

But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and although I will multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt,

The one who winks his eyes devises perverse things, and one who compresses his lips brings about evil.

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

The Lord will strike Egypt, striking and then healing them. They will turn to the Lord and he will listen to their prayers and heal them.

So the Lord’s word to them will sound like meaningless gibberish, senseless babbling, a syllable here, a syllable there. As a result, they will fall on their backsides when they try to walk, and be injured, ensnared, and captured.

For the Lord has poured out on you a strong urge to sleep deeply. He has shut your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers).

Therefore I will again do an amazing thing for these people – an absolutely extraordinary deed. Wise men will have nothing to say, the sages will have no explanations.”

You will be shocked and amazed! You are totally blind! They are drunk, but not because of wine; they stagger, but not because of beer.

They do not comprehend or understand, for their eyes are blind and cannot see; their minds do not discern.

Why, Lord, do you make us stray from your ways, and make our minds stubborn so that we do not obey you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance!

The human mind is more deceitful than anything else. It is incurably bad. Who can understand it?

Tell them: ‘Hear this, you foolish people who have no understanding, who have eyes but do not discern, who have ears but do not perceive:

I answered, “Who would listen if I spoke to them and warned them? Their ears are so closed that they cannot hear! Indeed, what the Lord says is offensive to them. They do not like it at all.

Give them a distraught heart; may your curse be on them!

Again the Lord said to me, “Take up once more the equipment of a foolish shepherd.

“But they refused to pay attention, turning away stubbornly and stopping their ears so they could not hear.

For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them.”

For the heart of this people has become dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”’

Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out,

to the latter an odor from death to death, but to the former a fragrance from life to life. And who is adequate for these things?

But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the Lord our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day.

Your eyes have seen the great judgments, those signs and mighty wonders.

But to this very day the Lord has not given you an understanding mind, perceptive eyes, or discerning ears!

For after I have brought them to the land I promised to their ancestors – one flowing with milk and honey – and they eat their fill and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.

But Jeshurun became fat and kicked, you got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.
