“I have been inactive for a long time; I kept quiet and held back. Like a woman in labor I groan; I pant and gasp.

For I am full of words, and the spirit within me constrains me.

I will speak, so that I may find relief; I will open my lips, so that I may answer.

From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor.

When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you!

For this reason the Lord is ready to show you mercy; he sits on his throne, ready to have compassion on you. Indeed, the Lord is a just God; all who wait for him in faith will be blessed.

Whom are you worried about? Whom do you fear, that you would act so deceitfully and not remember me or think about me? Because I have been silent for so long, you are not afraid of me.

In light of all this, how can you still hold back, Lord? How can you be silent and continue to humiliate us?

Look, I have decreed: I will not keep silent, but will pay them back; I will pay them back exactly what they deserve,

I, the Lord, say: ‘You people have deserted me! You keep turning your back on me.’ So I have unleashed my power against you and have begun to destroy you. I have grown tired of feeling sorry for you!”

In fact, I hear a cry like that of a woman in labor, a cry of anguish like that of a woman giving birth to her first baby. It is the cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath, reaching out for help, saying, “I am done in! My life is ebbing away before these murderers!”

Finally the Lord could no longer endure your wicked deeds and the disgusting things you did. That is why your land has become the desolate, uninhabited ruin that it is today. That is why it has become a proverbial example used in curses.

Won’t God give justice to his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he delay long to help them?

And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him,
