What is my strength, that I should wait? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

Remember that my life is but a breath, that my eyes will never again see happiness.

I say, “O my God, please do not take me away in the middle of my life! You endure through all generations.

In earlier times you established the earth; the skies are your handiwork.

They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death.

Love the Lord, all you faithful followers of his! The Lord protects those who have integrity, but he pays back in full the one who acts arrogantly.

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go.

In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die; you will not get well.’”

This is the prayer of King Hezekiah of Judah when he was sick and then recovered from his illness:

I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O Lord, my God.

Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.
