Certainly you will not refuse one of my master’s minor officials and trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen.

The Lord had caused the Syrian camp to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a large army. Then they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has paid the kings of the Hittites and Egypt to attack us!”

A horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory is from the Lord.

Indeed, he says: “Are not my officials all kings?

Those who put their hope in Cush and took pride in Egypt will be afraid and embarrassed.

Egypt is totally incapable of helping. For this reason I call her ‘Proud one who is silenced.’”

The Egyptians are mere humans, not God; their horses are made of flesh, not spirit. The Lord will strike with his hand; the one who helps will stumble and the one being helped will fall. Together they will perish.

Look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If someone leans on it for support, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him!

Now make a deal with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, provided you can find enough riders for them.

Why do you constantly go about changing your political allegiances? You will get no help from Egypt just as you got no help from Assyria.

Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so, for the Lord has said you must never again return that way.
