But Pharaoh’s protection will bring you nothing but shame, and the safety of Egypt’s protective shade nothing but humiliation.

Now look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If a man leans for support on it, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him.

Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile.

Like a bad tooth or a foot out of joint, so is confidence in an unfaithful person at the time of trouble.

Those who put their hope in Cush and took pride in Egypt will be afraid and embarrassed.

At that time those who live on this coast will say, ‘Look what has happened to our source of hope to whom we fled for help, expecting to be rescued from the king of Assyria! How can we escape now?’”

Why do you constantly go about changing your political allegiances? You will get no help from Egypt just as you got no help from Assyria.

For the Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, ‘If you go to Egypt, I will pour out my wrath on you just as I poured out my anger and wrath on the citizens of Jerusalem. You will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example of those who have been cursed and that people use in pronouncing a curse. You will never see this place again.’

So now be very sure of this: You will die from war, starvation, or disease in the place where you want to go and live.”

The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, “I will punish Amon, the god of Thebes. I will punish Egypt, its gods, and its kings. I will punish Pharaoh and all who trust in him.

when they grasped you with their hand, you broke and tore their shoulders, and when they leaned on you, you splintered and caused their legs to be unsteady.

Even the calf idol will be carried to Assyria, as tribute for the great king. Ephraim will be disgraced; Israel will be put to shame because of its wooden idol.

For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
