Isaiah 28:22

New English Translation

So now, do not mock, or your chains will become heavier! For I have heard a message about decreed destruction, from the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, against the entire land.

The messengers journeyed from city to city through the land of Ephraim and Manasseh as far as Zebulun, but people mocked and ridiculed them.

So the Lord brought against them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. They seized Manasseh, put hooks in his nose, bound him with bronze chains, and carried him away to Babylon.

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, and ridiculed his prophets. Finally the Lord got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.

For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars.

Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.”

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and floggings for the backs of fools.

The one who stiffens his neck after numerous rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy.

But when the sovereign master finishes judging Mount Zion and Jerusalem, then I will punish the king of Assyria for what he has proudly planned and for the arrogant attitude he displays.

Pay attention and listen to my message! Be attentive and listen to what I have to say!

I did not spend my time in the company of other people, laughing and having a good time. I stayed to myself because I felt obligated to you and because I was filled with anger at what they had done.

Lord, you coerced me into being a prophet, and I allowed you to do it. You overcame my resistance and prevailed over me. Now I have become a constant laughingstock. Everyone ridicules me.

This whole area will become a desolate wasteland. These nations will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years.’

Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong when I deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it!

Whatever you plot against the Lord, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time.

They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Now when they heard about the resurrection from the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
