Israel said to Joseph, “Your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” “I’m ready,” Joseph replied.

Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” Abraham replied.

But the Lord’s angel called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered.

When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he was almost blind, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son!” “Here I am!” Esau replied.

He went to his father and said, “My father!” Isaac replied, “Here I am. Which are you, my son?”

After he left Paddan Aram, Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped near the city.

When his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,

“I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I will send my one dear son; perhaps they will respect him.’

However, Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He replied, “Here I am.”

Then the Lord called Samuel a third time. So he got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me!” Eli then realized that it was the Lord who was calling the boy.
