Can people make their own gods? No, what they make are not gods at all.”

The Lord asked, “How can I leave you unpunished, Jerusalem? Your people have rejected me and have worshiped gods that are not gods at all. Even though I supplied all their needs, they were like an unfaithful wife to me. They went flocking to the houses of prostitutes.

Throw away all your sins you have committed and fashion yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why should you die, O house of Israel?

I said to them, “Each of you must get rid of the detestable idols you keep before you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.”

I will sprinkle you with pure water and you will be clean from all your impurities. I will purify you from all your idols.

As they drank wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Anyone who touches his bed must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

But if he does not wash his clothes and does not bathe his body, he will bear his punishment for iniquity.’”

You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be ceremonially clean, and afterward you may enter the camp.’”

And you see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a large crowd, not only in Ephesus but in practically all of the province of Asia, by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.

So do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that could defile the body and the spirit, and thus accomplish holiness out of reverence for God.

Formerly when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods at all.

and the curse if you pay no attention to his commandments and turn from the way I am setting before you today to pursue other gods you have not known.

They made him jealous with other gods, they enraged him with abhorrent idols.

You must not have any other gods besides me.

Now obey the Lord and worship him with integrity and loyalty. Put aside the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt and worship the Lord.

If you have no desire to worship the Lord, choose today whom you will worship, whether it be the gods whom your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my family will worship the Lord!”

Joshua told all the people, “Here is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘In the distant past your ancestors lived beyond the Euphrates River, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshiped other gods,

If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you; he will bring disaster on you and destroy you, though he once treated you well.”

Joshua said, “Now put aside the foreign gods that are among you and submit to the Lord God of Israel.”

save others by snatching them out of the fire; have mercy on others, coupled with a fear of God, hating even the clothes stained by the flesh.

They threw away the foreign gods they owned and worshiped the Lord. Finally the Lord grew tired of seeing Israel suffer so much.

So Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law is returning to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law back home!”

He replied, “Yes, in peace. I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” So he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you are really turning to the Lord with all your hearts, remove from among you the foreign gods and the images of Ashtoreth. Give your hearts to the Lord and serve only him. Then he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
