Genesis 32:28

“No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him, “but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”

Then God said to Abraham, “As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name.

No longer will your name be Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham because I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.

But Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and warned him, “Be careful that you neither bless nor curse Jacob.”

So Jacob was left alone. Then a man wrestled with him until daybreak.

The man asked him, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob.”

There he set up an altar and called it “The God of Israel is God.”

But Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, hugged his neck, and kissed him. Then they both wept.

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but your name will no longer be called Jacob; Israel will be your name.” So God named him Israel.

and sent word through Nathan the prophet that he should be named Jedidiah for the Lord’s sake.

Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.

When a person’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he even reconciles his enemies to himself.

Now, this is what the Lord says, the one who created you, O Jacob, and formed you, O Israel: “Don’t be afraid, for I will protect you. I call you by name, you are mine.

Your names will live on in the curse formulas of my chosen ones. The sovereign Lord will kill you, but he will give his servants another name.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to investigate the land. And Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.
