Exodus 30:12

“When you take a census of the Israelites according to their number, then each man is to pay a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, so that there will be no plague among them when you number them.

An adversary opposed Israel, inciting David to count how many warriors Israel had.

three years of famine, or three months being chased by your enemies and struck down by their swords, or three days being struck down by the Lord, during which a plague will invade the land and the Lord’s messenger will destroy throughout Israel’s territory.’ Now, decide what I should tell the one who sent me.”

So the Lord sent a plague through Israel, and 70,000 Israelite men died.

Joab son of Zeruiah started to count the men but did not finish. God was angry with Israel because of this, so the number was not recorded in the scroll called The Annals of King David.

So the king summoned Jehoiada the chief priest, and said to him, “Why have you not made the Levites collect from Judah and Jerusalem the tax authorized by Moses the Lord’s servant and by the assembly of Israel at the tent containing the tablets of the law?”

An edict was sent throughout Judah and Jerusalem requiring the people to bring to the Lord the tax that Moses, God’s servant, imposed on Israel in the wilderness.

and if God is gracious to him and says, ‘Spare him from going down to the place of corruption, I have found a ransom for him,’

Be careful that no one entices you with riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.

Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother; he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price

and said to him, “Your servants have taken a count of the men who were in the battle, who were under our authority, and not one is missing.

So we have brought as an offering for the Lord what each man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
