He took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said, “We are willing to do and obey all that the Lord has spoken.”

There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed there in Horeb. It was there that the Lord made an agreement with the Israelites after he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

They swore their allegiance to the Lord, shouting their approval loudly and sounding trumpets and horns.

He says: “Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!”

But they deceived him with their words, and lied to him.

and all the people answered together, “All that the Lord has commanded we will do!” So Moses brought the words of the people back to the Lord.

“The Lord God of Israel has a message for you. ‘I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt where they had been slaves. It stipulated,

We will obey what the Lord our God to whom we are sending you tells us to do. It does not matter whether we like what he tells us or not. We will obey what he tells us to do so that things will go well for us.”

“‘Then I passed by you and watched you, noticing that you had reached the age for love. I spread my cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I swore a solemn oath to you and entered into a marriage covenant with you, declares the sovereign Lord, and you became mine.

Do we not all have one father? Did not one God create us? Why do we betray one another, in this way making light of the covenant of our ancestors?

After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers, if you have any message of exhortation for the people, speak it.”

And after you have read this letter, have it read to the church of Laodicea. In turn, read the letter from Laodicea as well.

I call on you solemnly in the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.

The people said to Joshua, “We will worship the Lord our God and obey him.”
