Isn’t this what we told you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone so that we can serve the Egyptians, because it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!’”

Our ancestors in Egypt failed to appreciate your miraculous deeds, they failed to remember your many acts of loyal love, and they rebelled at the sea, by the Red Sea.

When Pharaoh released the people, God did not lead them by the way to the land of the Philistines, although that was nearby, for God said, “Lest the people change their minds and return to Egypt when they experience war.”

And now indeed the cry of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen how severely the Egyptians oppress them.

and they said to them, “May the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the opinion of Pharaoh and his servants, so that you have given them an excuse to kill us!”

Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and hard labor.

Ephraim has attached himself to idols; Do not go near him!

So now, Lord, kill me instead, because I would rather die than live!”

When the sun began to shine, God sent a hot east wind. So the sun beat down on Jonah’s head, and he grew faint. So he despaired of life, and said, “I would rather die than live!”

“Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!”

Then he cried out with a loud voice, “Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I implore you by God – do not torment me!”
