It is better to go to a funeral than a feast. For death is the destiny of every person, and the living should take this to heart.

So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely.

The wise man can see where he is going, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also realized that the same fate happens to them both.

For the wise man, like the fool, will not be remembered for very long, because in the days to come, both will already have been forgotten. Alas, the wise man dies – just like the fool!

For the fate of humans and the fate of animals are the same: As one dies, so dies the other; both have the same breath. There is no advantage for humans over animals, for both are fleeting.

Both go to the same place, both come from the dust, and to dust both return.

if he should live a thousand years twice, yet does not enjoy his prosperity. For both of them die!

Everyone shares the same fate – the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the ceremonially clean and unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. What happens to the good person, also happens to the sinner; what happens to those who make vows, also happens to those who are afraid to make vows.

This is the unfortunate fact about everything that happens on earth: the same fate awaits everyone. In addition to this, the hearts of all people are full of evil, and there is folly in their hearts during their lives – then they die.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything; they have no further reward – and even the memory of them disappears.

You said, ‘I will rule forever as permanent queen!’ You did not think about these things; you did not consider how it would turn out.

“‘Do not go to a house where people are feasting and sit down to eat and drink with them either.

Here then is what the Lord who rules over all says: ‘Think carefully about what you are doing.

If you do not listen and take seriously the need to honor my name,” says the Lord who rules over all, “I will send judgment on you and turn your blessings into curses – indeed, I have already done so because you are not taking it to heart.

Who can count the dust of Jacob, Or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, and let the end of my life be like theirs.”

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

I wish that they were wise and could understand this, and that they could comprehend what will happen to them.”

he said to them, “Keep in mind all the words I am solemnly proclaiming to you today; you must command your children to observe carefully all the words of this law.

Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, they exult in their shame, and they think about earthly things.

And just as people are appointed to die once, and then to face judgment,
