Ecclesiastes 5:2

New English Translation

Do not be rash with your mouth or hasty in your heart to bring up a matter before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth! Therefore, let your words be few.

Then Abraham asked, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord (although I am but dust and ashes),

Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak! What if thirty are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Finally Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God is with me and protects me on this journey I am taking and gives me food to eat and clothing to wear,

Then this stone that I have set up as a sacred stone will be the house of God, and I will surely give you back a tenth of everything you give me.”

Our God is in heaven! He does whatever he pleases!

When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise.

It is a snare for a person to rashly cry, “Holy!” and only afterward to consider what he has vowed.

The words of a wise person win him favor, but the words of a fool are self-destructive.

At the beginning his words are foolish and at the end his talk is wicked madness,

Just as dreams come when there are many cares, so the rash vow of a fool occurs when there are many words.

Just as there is futility in many dreams, so also in many words. Therefore, fear God!

for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans.

or when a person swears an oath, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips, whether to do evil or to do good, with regard to anything which the individual might speak thoughtlessly in an oath, even if he did not realize it, but he himself has later come to know it and is guilty with regard to one of these oaths –

When you pray, do not babble repetitiously like the Gentiles, because they think that by their many words they will be heard.

So pray this way: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored,

He swore to her, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well.
