They lie around on beds decorated with ivory, and sprawl out on their couches. They eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the middle of the pen.

When they sat down to eat their food, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were carrying spices, balm, and myrrh down to Egypt.

The furnishings included linen and purple curtains hung by cords of the finest linen and purple wool on silver rings, alabaster columns, gold and silver couches displayed on a floor made of valuable stones of alabaster, mother-of-pearl, and mineral stone.

Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; their thoughts are sinful.

But look, there is outright celebration! You say, “Kill the ox and slaughter the sheep, eat meat and drink wine. Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

The splendid crown of Ephraim’s drunkards is doomed, the withering flower, its beautiful splendor, situated at the head of a rich valley, the crown of those overcome with wine.

“‘Do not go to a house where people are feasting and sit down to eat and drink with them either.

The women singing in the temple will wail in that day.” The sovereign Lord is speaking. “There will be many corpses littered everywhere! Be quiet!”

The city’s rich men think nothing of resorting to violence; her inhabitants lie, their tongues speak deceptive words.

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

You have lived indulgently and luxuriously on the earth. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.
