Now the passage of scripture the man was reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

I was stone silent; I held back the urge to speak. My frustration grew;

I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done.

Before this I had been like a docile lamb ready to be led to the slaughter. I did not know they were making plans to kill me. I did not know they were saying, “Let’s destroy the tree along with its fruit! Let’s remove Jeremiah from the world of the living so people will not even be reminded of him any more.”

But you, Lord, know all about me. You watch me and test my devotion to you. Drag these wicked men away like sheep to be slaughtered! Appoint a time when they will be killed!

“I will lead them off to be slaughtered like lambs, rams, and male goats.”

As it is written, “For your sake we encounter death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received – that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures,

but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.
