Acts 11:19

New English Translation

Now those who had been scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message to no one but Jews.

Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, “Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?

But there were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene among them who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks too, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus.

A report about them came to the attention of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen (a close friend of Herod the tetrarch from childhood) and Saul.

So Barnabas and Saul, sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.

From there they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.

Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to send men chosen from among them, Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, leaders among the brothers, to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas.

So they were sent on their way by the church, and as they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, they were relating at length the conversion of the Gentiles and bringing great joy to all the brothers.

So when they were dismissed, they went down to Antioch, and after gathering the entire group together, they delivered the letter.

But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and proclaiming (along with many others) the word of the Lord.

They had a sharp disagreement, so that they parted company. Barnabas took along Mark and sailed away to Cyprus,

and when he arrived at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem and then went down to Antioch.

Some of the disciples from Caesarea came along with us too, and brought us to the house of Mnason of Cyprus, a disciple from the earliest times, with whom we were to stay.

We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went aboard, and put out to sea.

God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities.”

So Joseph, a Levite who was a native of Cyprus, called by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated “son of encouragement”),

The proposal pleased the entire group, so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a Gentile convert to Judaism from Antioch.

But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he had clearly done wrong.
