I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.

Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.’”

But I will not tear away the entire kingdom; I will leave your son one tribe for my servant David’s sake and for the sake of my chosen city Jerusalem.”

I will always extend my loyal love to him, and my covenant with him is secure.

if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments,

Where are your earlier faithful deeds, O Lord, the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David?

I will shield this city and rescue it for the sake of my reputation and because of my promise to David my servant.”’”

Pay attention and come to me! Listen, so you can live! Then I will make an unconditional covenantal promise to you, just like the reliable covenantal promises I made to David.

His dominion will be vast and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. He will rule on David’s throne and over David’s kingdom, establishing it and strengthening it by promoting justice and fairness, from this time forward and forevermore. The Lord’s intense devotion to his people will accomplish this.

For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and presumption is like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

Samuel said to Saul, “I will not go back with you, for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel!”

Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to one of your colleagues who is better than you!

Now the Spirit of the Lord had turned away from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

He even stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel. He lay there naked all that day and night. (For that reason it is asked, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”)
