David sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.

Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I chose you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.

He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men.

That day David first gave to Asaph and his colleagues this song of thanks to the Lord:

The godly face many dangers, but the Lord saves them from each one of them.

Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One!

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously, the horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea.

David stayed in the strongholds that were in the desert and in the hill country of the desert of Ziph. Saul looked for him all the time, but God did not deliver David into his hand.

May the Lord be our judge and arbiter. May he see and arbitrate my case and deliver me from your hands!”

In the same way that I valued your life this day, may the Lord value my life and deliver me from all danger.”

David thought to himself, “One of these days I’m going to be swept away by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of searching for me through all the territory of Israel and I will escape from his hand.”
