The army of Israel was defeated there by David’s men. The slaughter there was great that day – 20,000 soldiers were killed.

Then Absalom happened to come across David’s men. Now as Absalom was riding on his mule, it went under the branches of a large oak tree. His head got caught in the oak and he was suspended in midair, while the mule he had been riding kept going.

The remaining 27,000 ran to Aphek and went into the city, but the wall fell on them. Now Ben Hadad ran into the city and hid in an inner room.

Rise up, Lord! Deliver me, my God! Yes, you will strike all my enemies on the jaw; you will break the teeth of the wicked.

Vindicate me, O God! Fight for me against an ungodly nation! Deliver me from deceitful and evil men!

But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

Fear the Lord, my child, as well as the king, and do not associate with rebels,

for suddenly their destruction will overtake them, and who knows the ruinous judgment both the Lord and the king can bring?

As they fled from Israel on the slope leading down from Beth Horon, the Lord threw down on them large hailstones from the sky, all the way to Azekah. They died – in fact, more died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.
