So David got up from the ground, bathed, put on oil, and changed his clothes. He went to the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then, when he entered his palace, he requested that food be brought to him, and he ate.

When David saw that his servants were whispering to one another, he realized that the child was dead. So David asked his servants, “Is the child dead?” They replied, “Yes, he’s dead.”

His servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? While the child was still alive, you fasted and wept. Once the child was dead you got up and ate food!”

So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman. He told her, “Pretend to be in mourning and put on garments for mourning. Don’t anoint yourself with oil. Instead, act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for some time.

Now Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, came down to meet the king. From the day the king had left until the day he safely returned, Mephibosheth had not cared for his feet nor trimmed his mustache nor washed his clothes.

They brought the ark of the Lord and put it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord.

King David went in, sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point?

Then Job got up and tore his robe. He shaved his head, and then he threw himself down with his face to the ground.

But he replied, “You’re talking like one of the godless women would do! Should we receive what is good from God, and not also receive what is evil?” In all this Job did not sin by what he said.

Praise the Lord, O my soul! With all that is within me, praise his holy name!

The Lord is compassionate and merciful; he is patient and demonstrates great loyal love.

I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done.

Come! Let’s bow down and worship! Let’s kneel before the Lord, our creator!

Do not be wise in your own estimation; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Let your clothes always be white, and do not spare precious ointment on your head.

When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfumed oil.

So bathe yourself, rub on some perfumed oil, and get dressed up. Then go down to the threshing floor. But don’t let the man know you’re there until he finishes his meal.

Now please forgive my sin! Go back with me so I can worship the Lord.”

So Samuel followed Saul back, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
