The king of Assyria sent his commanding general, the chief eunuch, and the chief adviser from Lachish to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem, along with a large army. They went up and arrived at Jerusalem. They went and stood at the conduit of the upper pool which is located on the road to the field where they wash and dry cloth.

The king ordered, “Go, find out where he is, so I can send some men to capture him.” The king was told, “He is in Dothan.”

“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.

Saul went on one side of the mountain, while David and his men went on the other side of the mountain. David was hurrying to get away from Saul, but Saul and his men were surrounding David and his men so they could capture them.

So Saul took three thousand select men from all Israel and went to find David and his men in the region of the rocks of the mountain goats.
