2 Kings 17:34

To this very day they observe their earlier practices. They do not worship the Lord; they do not obey the rules, regulations, law, and commandments that the Lord gave the descendants of Jacob, whom he renamed Israel.

“No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him, “but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”

Then Jacob asked, “Please tell me your name.” “Why do you ask my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.

There he set up an altar and called it “The God of Israel is God.”

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but your name will no longer be called Jacob; Israel will be your name.” So God named him Israel.

Then he told Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces, for this is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Look, I am about to tear the kingdom from Solomon’s hand and I will give ten tribes to you.

Now you say, ‘Go and say to your master, “Elijah is back.”’

Then Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes that descended from Jacob, to whom the Lord had said, “Israel will be your new name.”

When they first moved in, they did not worship the Lord. So the Lord sent lions among them and the lions were killing them.

They were worshiping the Lord and at the same time serving their own gods in accordance with the practices of the nations from which they had been deported.

But they pay no attention; instead they observe their earlier practices.

He attacks his friends; he breaks his solemn promises to them.

The one who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, but the one who is perverted in his ways despises him.

Listen to this, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name ‘Israel,’ and are descended from Judah, who take oaths in the name of the Lord, and invoke the God of Israel – but not in an honest and just manner.
