2 Chronicles 32:21

New English Translation

The Lord sent a messenger and he wiped out all the soldiers, princes, and officers in the army of the king of Assyria. So Sennacherib returned home humiliated. When he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.

When the angel extended his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented from his judgment. He told the angel who was killing the people, “That’s enough! Stop now!” (Now the Lord’s angel was near the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.)

Isaiah son of Amoz sent this message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I have heard your prayer concerning King Sennacherib of Assyria.

King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed about this and cried out to heaven.

The Lord delivered Hezekiah and the residents of Jerusalem from the power of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from all the other nations. He made them secure on every side.

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength – who has resisted him and remained safe?

I will humiliate his enemies, and his crown will shine.

He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever.”

All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame,

He humbles princes; the kings of the earth regard him as awesome.

The bravehearted were plundered; they “fell asleep.” All the warriors were helpless.

At the sound of your battle cry, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse “fell asleep.”

You are awesome! Yes, you! Who can withstand your intense anger?

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Indeed, he says: “Are not my officials all kings?

I will break Assyria in my land, I will trample them underfoot on my hills. Their yoke will be removed from my people, the burden will be lifted from their shoulders.

Certainly you will not refuse one of my master’s minor officials and trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen.

Isaiah son of Amoz sent this message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Because you prayed to me concerning King Sennacherib of Assyria,

I am the Lord! That is my name! I will not share my glory with anyone else, or the praise due me with idols.

“Please ask the Lord to come and help us, because King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking us. Maybe the Lord will perform one of his miracles as in times past and make him stop attacking us and leave.”

Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, “Praised be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent forth his angel and has rescued his servants who trusted in him, ignoring the edict of the king and giving up their bodies rather than serve or pay homage to any god other than their God!

My God sent his angel and closed the lions’ mouths so that they have not harmed me, because I was found to be innocent before him. Nor have I done any harm to you, O king.”

Immediately an angel of the Lord struck Herod down because he did not give the glory to God, and he was eaten by worms and died.
