He followed in his father Asa’s footsteps and was careful to do what the Lord approved. (22:44) However, the high places were not eliminated; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense on the high places.

(14:1) Asa did what the Lord his God desired and approved.

He removed the pagan altars and the high places, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.

The high places were not eliminated from Israel, yet Asa was wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord throughout his lifetime.

Nevertheless you have done some good things; you removed the Asherah poles from the land and you were determined to follow the Lord.”

However, the high places were not eliminated; the people were still not devoted to the God of their ancestors.

When all this was over, the Israelites who were in the cities of Judah went out and smashed the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and demolished all the high places and altars throughout Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh. Then all the Israelites returned to their own homes in their cities.

Surely then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and will lift up your face toward God.

How blessed are those whose actions are blameless, who obey the law of the Lord.

Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds, for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.

Rather you must destroy their altars, smash their images, and cut down their Asherah poles.

Who is wise? Let him discern these things! Who is discerning? Let him understand them! For the ways of the Lord are right; the godly walk in them, but in them the rebellious stumble.

and said, “You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness – will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?

“Because you have not served the Lord your God joyfully and wholeheartedly with the abundance of everything you have,
