1 Timothy 6:20

O Timothy, protect what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and absurdities of so-called “knowledge.”

He also came to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but whose father was a Greek.

Also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were asking, “What does this foolish babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods.” (They said this because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.)

(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there used to spend their time in nothing else than telling or listening to something new.)

Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

Actually, there are many advantages. First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

Now we do speak wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are perishing.

For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.”

Let no one who delights in humility and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind.

Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you through an empty, deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

As a result we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the traditions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter.

This accords with the glorious gospel of the blessed God that was entrusted to me.

to Timothy, my genuine child in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!

nor to occupy themselves with myths and interminable genealogies. Such things promote useless speculations rather than God’s redemptive plan that operates by faith.

Some have strayed from these and turned away to empty discussion.

realizing that law is not intended for a righteous person, but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

But reject those myths fit only for the godless and gullible, and train yourself for godliness.

But you, as a person dedicated to God, keep away from all that. Instead pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.

to obey this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ

So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

But avoid profane chatter, because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness,

and not pay attention to Jewish myths and commands of people who reject the truth.

To Titus, my genuine son in a common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior!

He must hold firmly to the faithful message as it has been taught, so that he will be able to give exhortation in such healthy teaching and correct those who speak against it.

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, quarrels, and fights about the law, because they are useless and empty.

Therefore, remember what you received and heard, and obey it, and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come against you.
