Year after year he used to travel the circuit of Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah; he used to judge Israel in all of these places.

He called that place Bethel, although the former name of the town was Luz.

Jacob and all those who were with him arrived at Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

God says, “At the appointed times, I judge fairly.

Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen closely, O king! For judgment is about to overtake you! For you were like a trap to Mizpah, like a net spread out to catch Tabor.

Do not seek Bethel! Do not visit Gilgal! Do not journey down to Beer Sheba! For the people of Gilgal will certainly be carried into exile; and Bethel will become a place where disaster abounds.”

So the Israelites camped in Gilgal and celebrated the Passover in the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the plains of Jericho.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have taken away the disgrace of Egypt from you.” So that place is called Gilgal even to this day.

He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys and possessed thirty cities. To this day these towns are called Havvoth Jair – they are in the land of Gilead.

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel for eight years.

You who ride on light-colored female donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, you who walk on the road, pay attention!

Then Samuel called the people together before the Lord at Mizpah.

Samuel said to the people, “Come on! Let’s go to Gilgal and renew the kingship there.”

Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord on your behalf.”
