Now the Philistines had captured the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy.

The Lord revealed the following message during the year in which King Sargon of Assyria sent his commanding general to Ashdod, and he fought against it and captured it.

Make this announcement in the fortresses of Ashdod and in the fortresses in the land of Egypt. Say this: “Gather on the hills around Samaria! Observe the many acts of violence taking place within the city, the oppressive deeds occurring in it.”

Philip, however, found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through the area, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

Samuel revealed the word of the Lord to all Israel. Then the Israelites went out to fight the Philistines. They camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped at Aphek.

The ark of God was taken, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, were killed.

She said, “The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.”

When the ark of the Lord had been in the land of the Philistines for seven months,

Samuel took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Up to here the Lord has helped us.”
