When Abigail went back to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his house like that of the king. Nabal was having a good time and was very intoxicated. She told him absolutely nothing until morning’s light.

Two years later Absalom’s sheepshearers were in Baal Hazor, near Ephraim. Absalom invited all the king’s sons.

Absalom instructed his servants, “Look! When Amnon is drunk and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ kill him then and there. Don’t fear! Is it not I who have given you these instructions? Be strong and courageous!”

When Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David in Hebron, David prepared a banquet for Abner and the men who were with him.

They marched out at noon, while Ben Hadad and the thirty-two kings allied with him were drinking heavily in their quarters.

It goes well for the one who generously lends money, and conducts his business honestly.

Wine is a mocker and strong drink is a brawler; whoever goes astray by them is not wise.

Feasts are made for laughter, and wine makes life merry, but money is the answer for everything.

The splendid crown of Ephraim’s drunkards will be trampled underfoot.

Those who get up early to drink beer are as good as dead, those who keep drinking long after dark until they are intoxicated with wine.

“I will make her officials and wise men drunk, along with her governors, leaders, and warriors. They will fall asleep forever and never wake up,” says the King whose name is the Lord who rules over all.

Old and new wine take away the understanding of my people.

Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble.

“I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.

“But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.

Let us live decently as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in discord and jealousy.

For everything made evident is light, and for this reason it says: “Awake, O sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!”

And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit,

and said to her servants, “Go on ahead of me. I will come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

In the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him about these matters. He had a stroke and was paralyzed.
