New English Translation

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man through whom we can seek the Lord’s will. But I despise him because he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster. His name is Micaiah son of Imlah. Jehoshaphat said, “The king should not say such things.”

The king of Israel summoned an official and said, “Quickly bring Micaiah son of Imlah.”

When Jehoram saw Jehu, he asked, “Is everything all right, Jehu?” He replied, “How can everything be all right as long as your mother Jezebel promotes idolatry and pagan practices?”

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, and ridiculed his prophets. Finally the Lord got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.

Evil people self-destruct; those who hate the godly are punished.

The scorner does not love one who corrects him; he will not go to the wise.

Bloodthirsty people hate someone with integrity; as for the upright, they seek his life.

Do not reprove a mocker or he will hate you; reprove a wise person and he will love you.

Too bad for the wicked sinners! For they will get exactly what they deserve.

They say to the visionaries, “See no more visions!” and to the seers, “Don’t relate messages to us about what is right! Tell us nice things, relate deceptive messages.

This is what the Lord, the protector of Israel, their Holy One, says to the one who is despised and rejected by nations, a servant of rulers: “Kings will see and rise in respect, princes will bow down, because of the faithful Lord, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.”

Then some people said, “Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

The Israelites hate anyone who arbitrates at the city gate; they despise anyone who speaks honestly.

If a lying windbag should come and say, ‘I’ll promise you blessings of wine and beer,’ he would be just the right preacher for these people!

Does the family of Jacob say, ‘The Lord’s patience can’t be exhausted – he would never do such things’? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them,

Next I eradicated the three shepherds in one month, for I ran out of patience with them and, indeed, they detested me as well.

And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.

So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
