You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led.

hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk. They cannot even clear their throats.

Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Formerly when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods at all.

For people everywhere report how you welcomed us and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God

For we too were once foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to various passions and desires, spending our lives in evil and envy, hateful and hating one another.

You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed – not by perishable things like silver or gold,

For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
