1 Chronicles 28:8

New English Translation

So now, in the sight of all Israel, the Lord’s assembly, and in the hearing of our God, I say this: Carefully observe all the commands of the Lord your God, so that you may possess this good land and may leave it as a permanent inheritance for your children after you.

I will establish his kingdom permanently, if he remains committed to obeying my commands and regulations, as you are doing this day.’

“And you, Solomon my son, obey the God of your father and serve him with a submissive attitude and a willing spirit, for the Lord examines all minds and understands every motive of one’s thoughts. If you seek him, he will let you find him, but if you abandon him, he will reject you permanently.

Therefore do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons, and do not take their daughters in marriage for your sons. Do not ever seek their peace or welfare, so that you may be strong and may eat the good of the land and may leave it as an inheritance for your children forever.’

Help me to understand what your precepts mean! Then I can meditate on your marvelous teachings.

You demand that your precepts be carefully kept.

Then I will keep your law continually now and for all time.

“Pay attention to do everything I have told you, and do not even mention the names of other gods – do not let them be heard on your lips.

A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous.

My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,

Carefully read the scroll of the Lord! Not one of these creatures will be missing, none will lack a mate. For the Lord has issued the decree, and his own spirit gathers them.

Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.”

These Jews were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they eagerly received the message, examining the scriptures carefully every day to see if these things were so.

Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Pay attention to all the commandments I am giving you today.

You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God – the heads of your tribes, your elders, your officials, every Israelite man,

but with whoever stands with us here today before the Lord our God as well as those not with us here today.

Now, Israel, pay attention to the statutes and ordinances I am about to teach you, so that you might live and go on to enter and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.

I invoke heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that you will surely and swiftly be removed from the very land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess. You will not last long there because you will surely be annihilated.

So be sure to do them, because this will testify of your wise understanding to the people who will learn of all these statutes and say, “Indeed, this great nation is a very wise people.”

Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left!

Walk just as he has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land you are going to possess.

If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you; he will bring disaster on you and destroy you, though he once treated you well.”
