It obeys no voice; it can’t be taught to do right. It doesn’t trust the Lord; it doesn’t worship its God.

“But they were disobedient and turned against you and ignored your teachings. Your prophets warned them to come back to you, but they killed those prophets and spoke against you.

The wicked people are too proud. They do not look for God; there is no room for God in their thoughts.

You hate my teachings and turn your back on what I say.

But I am close to God, and that is good. The Lord God is my protection. I will tell all that you have done.

They had not believed God and had not trusted him to save them.

Knowledge begins with respect for the Lord, but fools hate wisdom and discipline.

Then you will say, “I hated being told what to do! I would not listen to correction!

Why should you continue to be punished? Why do you continue to turn against him? Your whole head is hurt, and your whole heart is sick.

The Lord says: “These people worship me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is based on nothing but human rules.

How terrible it will be for those people who go down to Egypt for help. They think horses will save them. They think their many chariots and strong horsemen will save them. But they don’t trust God, the Holy One of Israel, or ask the Lord for help.

“People of Jacob, you have not called to me; people of Israel, you have become tired of me.

The Arameans came from the east and the Philistines from the west, and they ate up Israel with their armies. But the Lord was still angry; his hand was still raised to punish the people.

This is what will happen to you; this is your part in my plans,” says the Lord. “Because you forgot me and trusted in false gods,

“I punished your people, but it did not help. They didn’t come back when they were punished. With your swords you killed your prophets like a hungry lion.

Judah, when you were successful, I warned you, but you said, ‘I won’t listen.’ You have acted like this since you were young; you have not obeyed me.

They turned their backs to me, not their faces. I tried to teach them again and again, but they wouldn’t listen or learn.

“This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: Jeremiah, go and tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem: ‘You should learn a lesson and obey my message,’ says the Lord.

“So the Lord God All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will soon bring every disaster I said would come to Judah and to everyone living in Jerusalem. I spoke to those people, but they refused to listen. I called out to them, but they did not answer me.’ ”

Lord, don’t you look for truth in people? You struck the people of Judah, but they didn’t feel any pain. You crushed them, but they refused to learn what is right. They became more stubborn than a rock; they refused to turn back to God.

“Human, say to the land, ‘You are a land that has not had rain or showers when God is angry.’

“ ‘By your sinful action you have become unclean. I wanted to cleanse you, but you are still unclean. You will never be cleansed from your sin until my anger against you is carried out.

and those who turned away from the Lord, and those who quit following the Lord and praying to him for direction.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right.

let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, because we have been made free from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
