I have followed the ways of the Lord; I have not done evil by turning from my God.

Anyone who refused to obey the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be killed. It did not matter if that person was important or unimportant, a man or woman.

The wicked people are too proud. They do not look for God; there is no room for God in their thoughts.

But, Lord, when you remove those who do evil, also remove those who stop following you. Let there be peace in Israel.

Their words are wicked lies; they are no longer wise or good.

How terrible! Israel is a nation of sin, a people loaded down with guilt, a group of children doing evil, children who are full of evil. They have left the Lord; they hate God, the Holy One of Israel, and have turned away from him as if he were a stranger.

“People of Jacob, you have not called to me; people of Israel, you have become tired of me.

The Arameans came from the east and the Philistines from the west, and they ate up Israel with their armies. But the Lord was still angry; his hand was still raised to punish the people.

But the people did not return to the one who had struck them; they did not follow the Lord All-Powerful.

Pour out your anger on other nations that do not know you and do not pray to you. Those nations have destroyed the people of Jacob. They have eaten them up completely and destroyed their homeland.

Jerusalem, you have left me,” says the Lord. “You keep going farther and farther away, so I have taken hold of you and destroyed you. I was tired of holding back my anger.

“My people have done two evils: They have turned away from me, the spring of living water. And they have dug their own wells, which are broken wells that cannot hold water.

Haven’t you brought this on yourselves by turning away from the Lord your God when he was leading you in the right way?

Israel’s wicked sister didn’t even come back to me with her whole heart, but only pretended,” says the Lord.

“Again, those who do right may turn away from doing good and do evil. If I make something bad happen to them, they will die. Because you have not warned them, they will die because of their sin, and the good they did will not be remembered. But I will hold you responsible for their deaths.

My people have made up their minds to turn away from me. The prophets call them to turn to me, but none of them honors me at all.

Israel’s pride will cause their defeat; they will not turn back to the Lord their God or look to him for help in all this.

All these people are as hot as an oven; they burn up their rulers. All their kings fall, and no one calls on me.

It obeys no voice; it can’t be taught to do right. It doesn’t trust the Lord; it doesn’t worship its God.

There is no one who understands. There is no one who looks to God for help.

So surely we also will be punished if we ignore this great salvation. The Lord himself first told about this salvation, and those who heard him testified it was true.

“If you turn away from the way of the Lord and become friends with these people who are not part of Israel and marry them,

“I am sorry I made Saul king, because he has stopped following me and has not obeyed my commands.” Samuel was upset, and he cried out to the Lord all night long.
