Cry, you people living in the market area, because all the merchants will be dead; all the silver traders will be gone.

The wicked may heap up silver like piles of dirt and have so many clothes they are like piles of clay.

But good people will wear what evil people have gathered, and the innocent will divide up their silver.

Cry, you leaders! Cry out loud! Roll around in the dust, leaders of the people! It is now time for you to be killed. You will fall and be scattered, like pieces of a broken jar.

So put on rough cloth, show how sad you are, and cry loudly. The terrible anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.

Shout and yell, human, because the sword is meant for my people, for all the rulers of Israel. They will be killed by the sword, along with my people. So beat your chest in sadness.

Even if the people are not destroyed, Egypt will capture them; Memphis will bury them. Weeds will grow over their silver treasures, and thorns will drive them out of their tents.

Priests, put on your rough cloth and cry to show your sadness. Servants of the altar, cry out loud. Servants of my God, keep your rough cloth on all night to show your sadness. Cry because there will be no more grain or drink offerings to offer in the Temple of your God.

Drunks, wake up and cry! All you people who drink wine, cry! Cry because your wine has been taken away from your mouths.

How terrible it will be for you who live by the Mediterranean Sea, you Philistines! The word of the Lord is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines. “I will destroy you so that no one will be left.”

Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord All-Powerful, and everyone who offers sacrifices will be able to take food from them and cook in them. At that time there will not be any buyers or sellers in the Temple of the Lord All-Powerful.

Then he said to those who were selling pigeons, “Take these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a place for buying and selling!”

You rich people, listen! Cry and be very sad because of the troubles that are coming to you.
