Israel, you have seen much, but you have not obeyed. You hear, but you refuse to listen.”

They are like hungry dogs that are never satisfied. They are like shepherds who don’t know what they are doing. They all have gone their own way; all they want to do is satisfy themselves.

Like wolves tearing a dead animal, Jerusalem’s leaders have killed people for profit.

Its judges take money to decide who wins in court. Its priests only teach for pay, and its prophets only look into the future when they get paid. But they lean on the Lord and say, “The Lord is here with us, so nothing bad will happen to us.”

Jesus said to all the people there, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘My Temple will be called a house for prayer.’ But you are changing it into a ‘hideout for robbers.’ ”

Jesus answered, “How terrible for you, you experts on the law! You make strict rules that are very hard for people to obey, but you yourselves don’t even try to follow those rules.

“The servant who knows what his master wants but is not ready, or who does not do what the master wants, will be beaten with many blows!

Then the king said to the servant, ‘I will condemn you by your own words, you evil servant. You knew that I am a hard man, taking money that I didn’t earn and gathering food that I didn’t plant.

Jesus said to them, “I know that you will tell me the old saying: ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You want to say, ‘We heard about the things you did in Capernaum. Do those things here in your own town!’ ”

I treat my body hard and make it my slave so that I myself will not be disqualified after I have preached to others.

Those who are circumcised do not obey the law themselves, but they want you to be circumcised so they can brag about what they forced you to do.
