But the people would not listen. They were stubborn, just as their ancestors had been who did not believe in the Lord their God.

Rehoboam did evil because he did not want to obey the Lord.

But the places where gods were worshiped were not removed, and the people did not really want to follow the God of their ancestors.

Don’t be like your ancestors or your relatives. They turned against the Lord, the God of their ancestors, so he caused other people to be disgusted with them. You know this is true.

“You must give your whole heart to him and hold out your hands to him for help.

Our ancestors in Egypt did not learn from your miracles. They did not remember all your kindnesses, so they turned against you at the Red Sea.

God gives the lonely a home. He leads prisoners out with joy, but those who turn against God will live in a dry land.

Their hearts were not really loyal to God; they did not keep his agreement.

They turned against God so often in the desert and grieved him there.

But they tested God and turned against God Most High; they did not keep his rules.

The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen these people, and I know that they are very stubborn.

Go up to a fertile land. But I will not go with you, because I might destroy you on the way, since you are such a stubborn people.”

This was because the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stubborn people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I would destroy you. So take off all your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.’ ”

He said, “Lord, if you are pleased with me, please go with us. I know that these are stubborn people, but forgive our evil and our sin. Take us as your own people.”

These people are like children who lie and refuse to obey; they refuse to listen to the Lord’s teachings.

I said to their children in the desert, “Don’t live by the rules of your parents, or obey their laws. Don’t make yourselves unclean with their idols.

“ ‘But they turned against me and refused to listen to me. They did not throw away the hateful idols which they saw and liked; they did not give up the idols of Egypt. Then I decided to pour out my anger against them while they were still in Egypt.

Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and full of faith. When he reached Antioch and saw how God had blessed the people, he was glad. He encouraged all the believers in Antioch always to obey the Lord with all their hearts, and many people became followers of the Lord.

Stephen continued speaking: “You stubborn people! You have not given your hearts to God, nor will you listen to him! You are always against what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you, just as your ancestors were.

I know how stubborn and disobedient you are. You have disobeyed the Lord while I am alive and with you, and you will disobey even more after I die!

But all of you who continued following the Lord your God are still alive today.

The Lord said to me, “I have watched these people, and they are very stubborn!

You have refused to obey the Lord as long as I have known you.

These leaders went to Gilead to talk to the people of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh. They said:

They are doing as they have always done. When I took them out of Egypt, they left me and served other gods. They are doing the same to you.
