God, be merciful to me because people are chasing me; the battle has pressed me all day long.

Lord, have mercy, because I am in misery. My eyes are weak from so much crying, and my whole being is tired from grief.

Do you rulers really say what is right? Do you judge people fairly?

God, save me from my enemies. Protect me from those who come against me.

My God loves me, and he goes in front of me. He will help me defeat my enemies.

God, you have rejected us and scattered us. You have been angry, but please come back to us.

Let’s swallow them alive, as death does; let’s swallow them whole, as the grave does.

All your enemies open their mouths to speak against you. They make fun and grind their teeth in anger. They say, “We have swallowed you up. This is the day we were waiting for! We have finally seen it happen.”

The Lord swallowed up without mercy all the houses of the people of Jacob; in his anger he pulled down the strong places of Judah. He threw her kingdom and its rulers down to the ground in dishonor.

The Lord was like an enemy; he swallowed up Israel. He swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed all her strongholds. He has caused more moaning and groaning for Judah.

Israel is eaten up; the people are mixed among the other nations and have become useless to me.

So this body that can be destroyed will clothe itself with that which can never be destroyed, and this body that dies will clothe itself with that which can never die. When this happens, this Scripture will be made true: “Death is destroyed forever in victory.”

But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, “Send David back to the city you gave him. He cannot go with us into battle. If he does, we’ll have an enemy in our own camp. He could please his king by killing our own men.
