Ezra had worked hard to know and obey the Teachings of the Lord and to teach his rules and commands to the Israelites.

Lord, teach me your demands, and I will keep them until the end.

Make me want to keep your rules instead of wishing for riches.

I will obey your teachings forever and ever.

Take away my desire to do evil or to join others in doing wrong. Don’t let me eat tasty food with those who do evil.

I remember all his laws and have not broken his rules.

Listen carefully to wisdom; set your mind on understanding.

because God is working in you to help you want to do and be able to do what pleases him.

Then Joshua said, “Now throw away the gods that you have. Love the Lord, the God of Israel, with all your heart.”

So prepare your minds for service and have self-control. All your hope should be for the gift of grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ is shown to you.

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer for ten days. But be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown of life.
