Our ancestors even made an idol of a calf for themselves. They said, ‘This is your god, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’ They spoke against you.

The people saw that a long time had passed and Moses had not come down from the mountain. So they gathered around Aaron and said, “Moses led us out of Egypt, but we don’t know what has happened to him. Make us gods who will lead us.”

So the Lord caused terrible things to happen to the people because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

So the people made an idol that looked like a calf. Then they brought sacrifices to it and were proud of what they had made with their own hands.

Do not worship idols, as some of them did. Just as it is written in the Scriptures: “They sat down to eat and drink, and then they got up and sinned sexually.”

I was afraid of the Lord’s anger and rage, because he was angry enough with you to destroy you, but the Lord listened to me again.

I took that sinful calf idol you had made and burned it in the fire. I crushed it into a powder like dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.

At Mount Sinai you made the Lord angry—angry enough to destroy you.
