But the Lord says, “I will now rise up, because the poor are being hurt. Because of the moans of the helpless, I will give them the help they want.”

They are like lions ready to kill; like lions, they sit in hiding.

Even my bones will say, “Lord, who is like you? You save the weak from the strong, the weak and poor from robbers.”

The wicked draw their swords and bend their bows to kill the poor and helpless, to kill those who are honest.

Look, they are waiting to ambush me. Cruel people attack me, but I have not sinned or done wrong, Lord.

Whoever mistreats the poor insults their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Whoever gets rich by mistreating the poor, and gives presents to the wealthy, will become poor.

A wicked ruler is as dangerous to poor people as a roaring lion or a charging bear.

What gives you the right to crush my people and grind the faces of the poor into the dirt?” The Lord God All-Powerful says this.

The wicked person uses evil like a tool. He plans ways to take everything from the poor. He destroys the poor with lies, even when the poor person is in the right.

There are wicked men among my people. Like those who make nets for catching birds, they set their traps to catch people.

He is like a bear ready to attack me, like a lion in hiding.

The people cheat others and steal. They hurt people who are poor and needy. They cheat foreigners and do not treat them fairly.

A lion in the forest does not roar unless it has caught an animal; it does not growl in its den when it has caught nothing.

All of the faithful people are gone; there is not one good person left in this country. Everyone is waiting to kill someone; everyone is trying to trap someone else.

The enemy brings them in with hooks. He catches them in his net and drags them in his fishnet. So he rejoices and sings for joy.

With the enemy’s own spear you stabbed the leader of his army. His soldiers rushed out like a storm to scatter us. They were happy as they were robbing the poor people in secret.

Listen to the shepherds crying because their rich pastures are destroyed. Listen to the lions roaring because the lovely land of the Jordan River is ruined.

The worker who is paid to keep the sheep is different from the shepherd who owns them. When the worker sees a wolf coming, he runs away and leaves the sheep alone. Then the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them.

But don’t believe them! More than forty men are hiding and waiting to kill Paul. They have all taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. Now they are waiting for you to agree.”
