They said to each other, “We are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his trouble, and he begged us to save him, but we refused to listen. That is why we are in this trouble now.”

Then she came to Elisha at the hill and grabbed his feet. Gehazi came near to pull her away, but Elisha said to him, “Leave her alone. She’s very upset, and the Lord has not told me about it. He has hidden it from me.”

“I hate my life, so I will complain without holding back; I will speak because I am so unhappy.

But another person dies with an unhappy heart, never enjoying any happiness.

“So I will not stay quiet; I will speak out in the suffering of my spirit. I will complain because I am so unhappy.

He would not let me catch my breath but would overwhelm me with misery.

The Lord tells his secrets to those who respect him; he tells them about his agreement.

Happiness makes a person smile, but sadness can break a person’s spirit.

The will to live can get you through sickness, but no one can live with a broken spirit.

So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away. I was unhappy and angry, and I felt the great power of the Lord.

“Now I am very troubled. Should I say, ‘Father, save me from this time’? No, I came to this time so I could suffer.

“I will not leave you all alone like orphans; I will come back to you.

Jesus answered, “If people love me, they will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

You have not seen Christ, but still you love him. You cannot see him now, but you believe in him. So you are filled with a joy that cannot be explained, a joy full of glory.

“Everyone who has ears should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. “I will give some of the hidden manna to everyone who wins the victory. I will also give to each one who wins the victory a white stone with a new name written on it. No one knows this new name except the one who receives it.

Hannah was so sad that she cried and prayed to the Lord.

Hannah answered, “No, sir, I have not drunk any wine or beer. I am a deeply troubled woman, and I was telling the Lord about all my problems.
