They said, “We, your servants, have flocks and herds. The Lord has captured for the Israelites a land that is good for animals—the land around Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon.

“You gave them kingdoms and nations; you gave them more land. They took over the country of Sihon king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.

But the water of Nimrim has dried up. The grass has dried up, and all the plants are dead; nothing green is left.

This message is to the country of Moab. This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: “How terrible it will be for the city of Nebo, because it will be ruined. The town of Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured; the strong city will be disgraced and shattered.

Moab will not be praised again. Men in the town of Heshbon plan Moab’s defeat. They say, ‘Come, let us put an end to that nation!’ Town of Madmen, you will also be silenced. The sword will chase you.

I cry with the people of the town of Jazer for you, the grapevines of the town of Sibmah. In the past your vines spread all the way to the sea, as far as the sea of Jazer. But the destroyer has taken over your fruit and grapes.

“Their crying can be heard from Moabite towns, from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz. It can be heard from Zoar as far away as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.

“People have run from the powerful enemy and have gone to Heshbon for safety. But fire started in Heshbon; a blaze has spread from the hometown of Sihon king of Moab. It burned up the leaders of Moab and destroyed those proud people.

So I am going to take away the cities that protect Moab’s borders, the best cities in that land: Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim.

A fire began in Heshbon; flames came from Sihon’s city. It destroyed Ar in Moab, and it burned the Arnon highlands.

But we defeated those Amorites. We ruined their towns from Heshbon to Dibon, and we destroyed them as far as Nophah, near Medeba.”

After Moses sent spies to the town of Jazer, they captured the towns around it, forcing out the Amorites who lived there.

The people of Reuben and Gad had large flocks and herds. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were good for the animals,

they came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the people.

Heshbon and all the towns on the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, and Beth Baal Meon,

Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley,

Heshbon, and Jazer, and the pastures around these four towns.

For three hundred years the Israelites have lived in Heshbon and Aroer and the towns around them and in all the cities along the Arnon River. Why have you not taken these cities back in all that time?
