But King Sihon would not let the Israelites pass through his country. He gathered his whole army together, and they marched out to meet Israel in the desert. At Jahaz they fought the Israelites.

People in the cities Heshbon and Elealeh cry out loud. You can hear their voices far away in the city Jahaz. Even the soldiers are frightened; they are shaking with fear.

People on the high plain have been punished. Judgment has come to these towns: Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath;

“Their crying can be heard from Moabite towns, from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz. It can be heard from Zoar as far away as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.

“But it was I who destroyed the Amorites before them, who were tall like cedar trees and as strong as oaks— I destroyed them completely.

But the king of Edom answered: “You may not pass through here. If you try, I will come and meet you with swords.”

The Edomites refused to let them pass through their country, so the Israelites turned back.

They were in the valley near Beth Peor, east of the Jordan River, in the land of Sihon. Sihon king of the Amorites ruled in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt.

But Sihon did not trust the Israelites to cross his land. So he gathered all of his people and camped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
