But if the Lord does something new, you will know they have insulted the Lord. The ground will open and swallow them. They will be buried alive and will go to the place of the dead, and everything that belongs to them will go with them.”

What has God above promised for people? What has the Almighty planned from on high?

It is ruin for evil people and disaster for those who do wrong.

When they were angry with us, they would have swallowed us alive.

Let death take away my enemies. Let them die while they are still young because evil lives with them.

The Lord will fight as he did at Mount Perazim. He will be angry as he was in the Valley of Gibeon. He will do his work, his strange work. He will finish his job, his strange job.

So the trees that grow by the water will not be proud to be tall; they will not put their tops among the clouds. None of the trees that are watered well will grow that tall, because they all are meant to die and go under the ground. They will be with people who have died and have gone down to the place of the dead.

When Moses finished saying these things, the ground under the men split open.

They were buried alive, going to the place of the dead, and everything they owned went with them. Then the earth covered them. They died and were gone from the community.
