“You have great mercy, so you did not leave them in the desert. The pillar of cloud guided them by day, and the pillar of fire led them at night, lighting the way they were to go.

You led our ancestors with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire at night. It lit the way they were supposed to go.

So you handed them over to their enemies, and their enemies treated them badly. But in this time of trouble our ancestors cried out to you, and you heard from heaven. You had great mercy and gave them saviors who saved them from the power of their enemies.

But because your mercy is great, you did not kill them all or leave them. You are a kind and merciful God.

He remembered his agreement with them, and he felt sorry for them because of his great love.

He led his people through the desert. His love continues forever.

When the cloud rose from the Holy Tent, the Israelites would begin to travel,

So the cloud of the Lord was over the Holy Tent during the day, and there was a fire in the cloud at night. So all the Israelites could see the cloud while they traveled.

“People of Jacob, remember these things! People of Israel, remember you are my servants. I made you, and you are my servants. So Israel, I will not forget you.

The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop.

But I acted for the sake of my name so it would not be dishonored in full view of the nations who watched as I had brought the Israelites out of Egypt.

But I had pity on them. I did not destroy them or put an end to them in the desert.

My God, pay attention and hear me. Open your eyes and see all the terrible things that have happened to us. See how our lives have been ruined and what has happened to the city that is called by your name. We do not ask these things because we are good; instead, we ask because of your mercy.

“But, Lord our God, you show us mercy and forgive us even though we have turned against you.

“I the Lord do not change. So you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.

and the Egyptians will tell this to those who live in this land. They have already heard about you, Lord. They know that you are with your people and that you were seen face to face. They know that your cloud stays over your people and that you lead your people with that cloud during the day and with fire at night.

Remember how the Lord your God has led you in the desert for these forty years, taking away your pride and testing you, because he wanted to know what was in your heart. He wanted to know if you would obey his commands.

For his own sake, the Lord won’t leave his people. Instead, he was pleased to make you his own people.
