Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.”

On the following day Solomon sent the people home. They blessed the king as they went, happy because of all the good things the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.

He has glory and majesty; he has power and joy in his Temple.

The Levites helped calm the people, saying, “Be quiet, because this is a holy day. Don’t be sad.”

Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send some of their food to others, and to celebrate with great joy. They finally understood what they had been taught.

This is why the Jewish people who live in the country and small villages celebrate on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar. It is a day of joyful feasting and a day for exchanging gifts.

because that was when the Jewish people got rid of their enemies. They were also to celebrate it as the month their sadness was turned to joy and their crying for the dead was turned into celebration. He told them to celebrate those days as days of joyful feasting and as a time for giving food to each other and presents to the poor.

Let the Israelites be happy because of God, their Maker. Let the people of Jerusalem rejoice because of their King.

You are their glorious strength, and in your kindness you honor our king.

A happy heart is like good medicine, but a broken spirit drains your strength.

Invest what you have in several different businesses, because you don’t know what disasters might happen.

The best that people can do is eat, drink, and enjoy their work. I saw that even this comes from God,

God wants all people to eat and drink and be happy in their work, which are gifts from God.

I have seen what is best for people here on earth. They should eat and drink and enjoy their work, because the life God has given them on earth is short.

So go eat your food and enjoy it; drink your wine and be happy, because that is what God wants you to do.

I have entered my garden, my sister, my bride. I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey. I have drunk my wine and my milk. Eat, friends, and drink; yes, drink deeply, lovers.

The Lord made me in the body of my mother to be his servant, to lead the people of Jacob back to him so that Israel might be gathered to him. The Lord will honor me, and I will get my strength from my God.

The Lord makes me very happy; all that I am rejoices in my God. He has covered me with clothes of salvation and wrapped me with a coat of goodness, like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding, like a bride dressed in jewels.

So be happy, people of Jerusalem; be joyful in the Lord your God. Because he does what is right, he has brought you rain; he has sent the fall rain and the spring rain for you, as before.

Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord All-Powerful, and everyone who offers sacrifices will be able to take food from them and cook in them. At that time there will not be any buyers or sellers in the Temple of the Lord All-Powerful.

So give what is in your dishes to the poor, and then you will be fully clean.

They have been tested by great troubles, and they are very poor. But they gave much because of their great joy.

although I might be able to put trust in myself. If anyone thinks he has a reason to trust in himself, he should know that I have greater reason for trusting in myself.

People who live on the earth will rejoice and be happy because these two are dead. They will send each other gifts, because these two prophets brought much suffering to those who live on the earth.

Ask your servants, and they will tell you. We come at a happy time, so be kind to my young men. Please give anything you can find for them and for your son David.’ ”
