Micah 7:8

Enemy, don’t laugh at me. I have fallen, but I will get up again. I sit in the shadow of trouble now, but the Lord will be a light for me.

“I have not been happy when my enemies fell or laughed when they had trouble.

A light shines in the dark for honest people, for those who are merciful and kind and good.

My enemies are chasing me; they crushed me to the ground. They made me live in darkness like those long dead.

They are overwhelmed and defeated, but we march forward and win.

The Lord is my light and the one who saves me. So why should I fear anyone? The Lord protects my life. So why should I be afraid?

Do not let my enemies laugh at me; they hate me for no reason. Do not let them make fun of me; they have no cause to hate me.

The wicked borrow and don’t pay back, but those who do right give freely to others.

If they stumble, they will not fall, because the Lord holds their hand.

I said, “Don’t let them laugh at me or brag when I am defeated.”

The Lord God is like a sun and shield; the Lord gives us kindness and honor. He does not hold back anything good from those whose lives are innocent.

Light shines on those who do right; joy belongs to those who are honest.

Come, family of Jacob, and let us follow the way of the Lord.

You will tell the prisoners, ‘Come out of your prison.’ You will tell those in darkness, ‘Come into the light.’ The people will eat beside the roads, and they will find food even on bare hills.

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? That person may walk in the dark and have no light. Then let him trust in the Lord and yet depend on his God.

Before those people lived in darkness, but now they have seen a great light. They lived in a dark land, but a light has shined on them.

Moab, you made fun of Israel. Israel was caught in the middle of a gang of thieves. When you spoke about Israel, you shook your head and acted as if you were better than it.

“Babylon, you are excited and happy, because you took my land. You dance around like a young cow in the grain. Your laughter is like the neighing of male horses.

“Say to the people of Judah: ‘This is what the Lord says: When people fall down, don’t they get up again? And when someone goes the wrong way, doesn’t he turn back?

This is what the Lord God says: You have clapped your hands and stamped your feet; you have laughed about all the insults you made against the land of Israel.

You were happy when the land of Israel was ruined, but I will do the same thing to you. Mount Seir and all Edom, you will become an empty ruin. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”

This is what the Lord God says: I speak in hot anger against the other nations. I speak against the people of Edom, who took my land for themselves with joy and with hate in their hearts. They forced out the people and took their pastureland.’

“The kingdom of David is like a fallen tent, but in that day I will set it up again and mend its broken places. I will rebuild its ruins as it was before.

“Edom, do not laugh at your brother Israel in his time of trouble or be happy about the people of Judah when they are destroyed. Do not brag when cruel things are done to them.

People of Jerusalem, strain and be in pain. Be like a woman trying to give birth, because now you must leave the city and live in the field. You will go to Babylon, but you will be saved from that place. The Lord will go there and buy you back from your enemies.

Then my enemies will see this, and they will be ashamed, those who said to me, ‘Where is the Lord your God?’ I will look down on them. They will get walked on, like mud in the street.”

At that time the Lord will protect the people in Jerusalem. Then even the weakest of them will be strong like David. And the family of David will be like God, like an angel of the Lord in front of them.

“But for you who honor me, goodness will shine on you like the sun, with healing in its rays. You will jump around, like well-fed calves.

These people who live in darkness will see a great light. They live in a place covered with the shadows of death, but a light will shine on them.”

I tell you the truth, you will cry and be sad, but the world will be happy. You will be sad, but your sadness will become joy.

Later, Jesus talked to the people again, saying, “I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness but will have the light that gives life.”

to open their eyes so that they may turn away from darkness to the light, away from the power of Satan and to God. Then their sins can be forgiven, and they can have a place with those people who have been made holy by believing in me.’

God once said, “Let the light shine out of the darkness!” This is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts by letting us know the glory of God that is in the face of Christ.

We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed.

The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God is its light, and the Lamb is the city’s lamp.

There will never be night again. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will give them light. And they will rule as kings forever and ever.
